The novel coronavirus has exposed how connected we are as humanity and just how many of our problems are related.
Charlie Goldsmith Associates’ work to use technology and data to get cash and support to schools and families at scale and speed has been scaled up to respond to COVID19:
In South Sudan:
- CGA fast-tracked EU-funded payments to 30,000 teachers in 3000 schools, to protect the education system to be ready to restart, and get cash to communities across the country
- The www.sssams.org system that CGA developed, which tracks 2.7m individual school pupils, was used to fast-track UK Aid cash to 470,000 girls in upper primary and secondary, to help them keep engaged with education, and come back to school, This helped support as many as 2.5m household members
- We produced a new collection of educational resources for remote learning tailored for South Sudan, including bandwidth-frugal resources, and SMS “bitesize” education materials to teachers’ and families’ phones
In Kenya, CGA worked with World University Service of Canada to get cash to Somali and South Sudanese refugee girls in Dadaab and Kakuma camps, and girls in the host community. CGA got agreement from the Refugee Affairs Secretariat of the Government of Kenya, for the first time, that refugees can get a Mobile Money (M-Pesa or similar) account with their Refugee ID: this will make life easier, more efficient and more dignified for hundreds of thousands of people
In Sierra Leone and Malawi, CGA teams helped put in place the remote management systems that will help to make schools get back to operation quickly, and operate smoothly when they reopened
CGA’s staff are majority Global South, at every level and in every function, with a small number of long-stay internationals. This has meant that CGA has been able not just to stay operational, but to scale up its work, when it is needed most.
